911 Dispatch,
On Wednesday, July 8, 2009 a 911 call was received by Central
Dispatch for two children who had been missing for over 3 hours in
Atlas Township. As professionals in this field, many thoughts go
through your mind when these types of calls are responded to. Always
hoping for the best, while staying realistic about the worst. As
time progressed and waves of resources were sent, it became very
apparent that additional support was needed. I needed air support,
K-9’s, volunteer coordination, HAM operators, and most importantly,
reverse 911 capabilities. Knowing what I already have know for my
entire 17 year career, the 911 Center could make all this happen! I
called Kirk Wilkinson, advised what I needed and he and the staff
did the rest. How cool is that!
For 2 hours after the reverse 911 calls had started, 911 dispatch
provided leads that my staff were able to follow up on. The plan was
in full effect and working. By 1900 hours the Center received a call
which ultimately led to the finding of both boys. The reunion
between the boys and their parents was priceless.
All that said, this could have never had happened without the
dedication and service of Central Dispatch. As a field operations
commander, I sometimes forget how precious and valuable the
dispatchers are to law enforcement. Not this time!
The 911Center has and always will be the benchmark for others to
follow. Thank you for all you do, much of which is
under-appreciated.
In humble spirit,
Chris Swanson – Captain
Office of Genesee County Sheriff |
