Our History

In 1972 the concept of a centralized dispatch system for police and fire services was born through the efforts of (the late) Mt. Morris Township Police Chief Charles Dunlay and the Michigan State Police.  Through their efforts and cooperation, an addition was built on the rear of the old State Police Post located at I-75 and Corunna Road to house this service. In the beginning the Genesee County Central Dispatch was responsible for answering telephones and dispatching of services to 6 police agencies and 7 fire departments.

The citizens in those areas were advised to call a seven-digit number, which exists to this day as a part of our emergency answering 911 phone system. In mid-1973 the operation began with State Police Sergeant Lloyd R. Fayling and 13 State Police dispatchers.

In 1996, in conjunction with the Urban Cooperation Act and the Emergency Telephone Service Enabling Act, the Genesee County 9-1-1 Consortium was born. Lloyd R. Fayling retired from the Michigan State Police and became the Director of the Genesee County 9-1-1 Consortium. On July 26, 2015, Director Fayling passed away unexpectedly. He had overseen the operations of Genesee County 9-1-1 for 43 years and serves as the namesake for our building.

In 2015, the City of Flint joined the 9-1-1 Consortium and we currently service all the communities in Genesee County with the exception of the City of Fenton. Our staff is made up of 62 staff consisting of 50 telecommunications staff, 6 supervisors, 2 information technology personnel, 1 office administrator, 1 deputy director and 1 director.

Today, Genesee County 9-1-1 dispatches for 27 police agencies, 22 fire departments and 7 emergency medical ambulance services with units spaced throughout the county. In 2017, we handled 460,189 total incoming calls annually. Genesee County 9-1-1 is headed by Director Tim Jones hired in 2016. Tim comes with a wealth of experience in the both law enforcement and the 9-1-1 industry.  We are here to serve all the citizens of Genesee County with professionalism, pride and respect as our valued customers.
